«a good leader is someone who values the life of his men over the success of the mission but understands that sometimes, the cost of failing a mission is higher than the cost of losing those men.»
«that’s a terrible line to have to walk.»
«yes, it is.»

Nobility doesn’t come hand in hand with catastrophe. It shows up later—just how much later usually depends on the individual—flying in like backup. The extra troops have arrived. You held out long enough to see the next wave drop.

That’s because of survival instincts. No soldier wants to die. And when they look out over their homeworld and see the end reaching down into the heart of a living, breathing city, the first thing they think is that somebody else out there is dying.

Somebody else. Not me.

Relief sure as hell comes hand in hand with guilt. It’s guilt’s weapon, not its deflector shields.

Anderson never said he thought he’d seen it all.

But of course he’s afraid. And too damn old for this. And the sunlight’s clear, debris falling like shooting stars. From a distance, it doesn’t look real. When the ground shakes with the first collapse, his knees go weak like he’s a raw recruit and this is his first day out in the field. All lessons, even the echo of his TO’s voice, fades in importance next to the pounding of his blood, the shaking of his fingertips.

Only nobody can know or see that happening.

Fear comes hand in hand with bravery. The gut’s connected right to the heart. Somehow, though, evolution severed that same connection to the mind. He’s too damn old for this—to be the hero the galaxy needs.

But he can be the hero its hero needs.

And no kid should be buried before their father is.

Shepard’s behind him. The whole crazy world’s ahead. It might get turned upside-down, but the old man comes hand in hand with the young one.

‘You see what I’m seeing?’ Shepard asks.

‘Sure,’ Anderson says.

And a few other things.
